ABOUT THE BENEFITS OF TRAINING
What will students learn and what benefits will they obtain through training in martial arts?
Let’s start with our 3-6 year old programs because parents often wonder if this is too young to start training but we say it is a great age to start.
We all know that children at this age are like sponges soaking up every word they hear and every physical action they experience. Experts will tell you that this is the best time to teach children a second language and continually stimulate their brain. They will also tell you that it is very important to engage them in physical skills that work the left and right side of the brain. Martial arts training dramatically helps children in both areas of learning. There is no need to work on self defence at this age because they are never far from their parents.
What we teach is balance, coordination, fine motor skills and dexterity through specially selected drills and exercises. Don’t expect children to be doing advanced forms and super jumping kicks because they need to have a secure platform to work from first.
The most important things to learn are firstly to develop a child’s self esteem and confidence so they are not scared to attempt a challenge. How many times have you seen a child attempt to play a game and they try once and can’t do it so they then want to give it up. Children don’t know the motto ‘If at first you don’t succeed, try and try again’ unless you teach them. Children are faced with these challenges every day and often parents are not around to help them with it. We present new challenges for children and help them through them several times in each class.
We want children to have fun and feel safe that they can express themselves and learn at their own pace.
Children are unsure of the rules and how to behave in a martial arts school and instructors are seen as strong authority figures, (therefore respond well to the instructor’s direction). It is therefore easy for us to in still ‘Respect’ respect of themselves, others and their environment. They are also exposed to ‘Courtesy’ and good manners through bowing and other respectful communication gestures. They will learn the ‘Discipline’ to finish a task and to control themselves when things don’t go their way. It is a great opportunity for children to expand their social circles and learn good behaviour patterns in a group environment.
The next age group is 7-12 years and they are taught slightly differently expanding the curriculum to include self defence, strength and awareness training with increased discipline and focus.
If a student is starting at 7-12 years we make sure they learn all the elements from the 3-6 year program and if they have just graduated from there we keep developing those skills.
You will start to see a higher degree of physical prowess that includes complex forms, bag training and partner drills.
It is a very important time in a child’s development as the skills and habits formed will be carried into adulthood. This means if parents have not assisted/in stilled their children with the discipline to follow things to the end, stick to a healthy diet, appreciate the value of physical exercise, study hard and do their best, they may never reach their potential as an adult.
Parents generally do the best they can for their children because they want them to grow up and achieve their goals. Parents can’t always allocate enough time for their children’s development but there are experts like us that can make a big difference in giving your child a head start when it comes to learning unique life skills.
Is it the Instructor or is it simply martial arts in general that will help your child achieve these benefits? It is a combination of both and the emphasised on what techniques are used in teaching the various age groups. It is important to note that most Asian cultures include martial arts training as part of their school curriculum which develops high achievers.
Teenagers in our 13-17 years program require more life skills to deal with new social environments and how to feel confident to say NO when they feel something is wrong. Confident kids, Assertive kids, Discipline kids can say ‘NO to Drugs’, ‘NO I’m not getting in that car’, ‘NO I’m not going in that back room with you’.
Many parents would love to wrap their children up in cotton wool and never let them out but we know this wouldn’t work. The only sure way of preparing a child is to equip them with appropriate life skills to operate in their world.
Teenagers have a lot more to juggle with study, sport and social activities and without discipline, high energy levels and good time management skills they can fall in a heap. There is no sure way of preparing children but martial arts training is certainly a good starting point.
Everyone who studies academically can only sustain it for a certain time and then their mind wonders, their body aches and they stop absorbing. With sound martial arts skills and continuous training a student can study longer and absorb more helping them to attain higher marks.
Often parents stop their children from doing sport / martial arts so they can put more time into study and this can be counter productive. There is a balance that should be adopted as exercise in general increase blood flow and energy levels allowing students to think clearer and study longer. Martial arts adds other elements like developing internal energy (Chi / Ki) which is renown for providing clarity, endurance, discipline and of course more energy.
Just a quick break every 30-40 minutes of study to run through a few martial moves will balance and reset mind ready to absorb material at a higher level. Regular full length training in martial arts at least twice per work will develop excellent endurance to study longer with less breaks.
As Australia has passed the USA for being the ‘fattest nation’ we should think about weight loss and better health for our children and ourselves. Obesity will create major health problems so it is important to have the right diet and exercise regime. We owe it to our children to help them avoid diseases like diabetes by watching their diet and encouraging them to exercise. Parents should do the same so they can be around for their children by not develop diabetes or heart disease themselves.
Martial arts ticks all the boxes when it comes to maintaining a healthy body as it is excellent for burning calories, toning and shaping muscles.
Many people use martial arts to enhance their ability to perform in other sports as the strength and conditioning exercises mixed with flexibility training help them obtain higher results.
Knowing how to protect yourself in daily life is a must especially if you have to commute by public transport. The knowledge to protect yourself and loved ones isn’t always about using physical techniques. Most physical confrontations can be avoided by recognising danger before it happens or by using appropriate verbal dialogue to defuse a situation. It is important to back up these skills with the right physical skills, understanding of how your body will react under stress and your legal position if you apply to much force.
Martial arts is a tool for health, to help you study, do other sports better and to protect yourself and loved ones.
