HISTORY
Martial Arts originated over 1500 year ago in the Shaolin
Temple, China. Monks of the temple study martial arts for
7-8 hours a day starting at 5am each morning. The Monks enrich their
knowledge through various academic studies as well as a strict following
of Chan Buddhism. The Monks philosophy is to respect
all life forms and promote peace and harmony. A very important part
of their daily practice is zen meditation and the Chinese healing
remedies.
Those studying at the Shaolin Temple
may start their practice at the tender age of three. For children
the greatest benefits of martial arts training are the increase
in confidence, focus, discipline, awareness and health to mention
but a few.
Shaolin Monks are renowned for their peak physical condition and amazing feats of acrobatics and fighting abilities. The original purpose of including martial arts into the monastery was so they could protect themselves from bandits and invading armies. These days there is no need to protect the monastery but the traditions are still kept and practised to this day. It is for this reason we have sort to partner with the temple so that we can help preserve their tradition by studying their martial arts and making better people for our community. The college does not incorporate religion into its classes only the philosophy (courtesy & respect etc) as practised by most traditional martial arts.
The
College hasn't just restricted itself to the Chinese arts of Kung
Fu, Tai Chi, Qi Qong it also includes the Japanese arts of Karate
Aikido Ju Jutsu as practised by the Principal Teacher Graham Slater.
We also have Group Fitness (to music), Self Defence and Meditation
classes that cater to a broad range of the community.
Our students can attend classes in any of the disciplines as part of their membership giving them the flexibility to one day practice a hard Kung Fu class and on another day enjoy a relaxing Tai Chi or Meditation class.
